After a shipwreck separates twin siblings Viola and Sebastian, Viola disguises herself as a young man named Cesario to seek work with Duke Orsino. Orsino is in love with the Lady Olivia, who is in mourning. Olivia falls for Cesario instead, while Viola secretly loves Orsino, leading to a series of mistaken identities, love triangles, and comedic chaos.
